Bladen County, NC was established in 1734 as Bladen Precinct of Bath County
from New Hanover Precinct. Bladen County was named for Martin Bladen. With the
abolition of Bath County in 1739, all of its constituent precincts became counties.
Originally, Bladen County had indefinite northern and western boundaries. Reductions
began in 1750, when its western part became Anson County. Bladen County is home
to the Elwell Ferry, one of three cable ferries still operational in North Carolina.
